Review: Masters of the Universe

It looks like DC has brought back He-Man in another edition to their growing collection of weekly $.99 comics. This one is by the legendary Geoff Johns! It seems a little strange to put Geoff on this sort of a “pet project” when he is the guy used to write DC’s big hitters (Justice League, Green Lantern) and bring some of their dying icon back to life (Flash, Aquaman). We have no complaints. If Johns wants to tackle the Eternia universe then, by all means, tackle.

*First off, a little disclaimer: Though I watched He-Man and the Masters of the Universe when I was about 5 years old. I remember nothing about it! I remember the phrase ground into my subconscious, “By the power of grey skull!!”  I have no idea what that means. And I vaguely remember a mullet or two. that’s about it.*

The story starts in a interesting direction. It goes way back to before the beginning of He-Man’s story (or before it I guess) and starts just after the death of king Grey Skull. Since it is a weekly short, It doesn’t real off with a bang, but feels a little soft to start. But you can tell it’s going to get pretty good. If you don’t really know much about the “Masters of the Universe” Universe. then you are in the same boat as I am. If you like Geoff Johns stuff, it’s worth the download anyway.

Artwise, it’s good too. It doesn’t really jump out with anything that makes you think, “Wow, who is this guy?!” but it’s good and solid.

Bottom Line: Pretty good little book. If you like He-Man or Geoff Johns, It’s a good bet you’ll like it.
